Appendix A: Functional calculus details

Projection-valued measure and the common functional calculus.

A. Functional Calculus Details

A.1 Borel functional calculus.

For KK selfadjoint with EKE_K, the map ϕ↦ϕ(K)=∫ϕ dEK\phi \mapsto \phi(K) = \int \phi\, dE_K is a ∗*-homomorphism from bounded Borel functions on σ(K)\mathop{\mathrm{\sigma}}(K) into B(H)B(\mathsf H), with ∥ϕ(K)∥=∥ϕ∥L∞(EK)\|\phi(K)\| = \|\phi\|_{L^\infty(E_K)}. Unbounded Borel ϕ\phi gives densely defined ϕ(K)\phi(K), selfadjoint when ϕ\phi is real.

A.2 Stone’s theorem.

Every strongly continuous one-parameter unitary group (Ut)(U_t) on H\mathsf H has a unique selfadjoint generator C~\widetilde C with Ut=e−itC~U_t = e^{-it\widetilde C}. Boundedness of C~\widetilde C is equivalent to operator-norm continuity of (Ut)(U_t).
