01 / THE MODEL

A perspective is an organization of a world

Shadow Theory and Consciousness begins with a direct proposal: awareness is an intrinsic aspect of reality, and a physically realized organization shapes its manifestation as a localized perspective. Your present world—its sounds, bodily feelings, objects, memories and possibilities—is a lived scene. The account asks what makes such a scene belong to a perspective, why its contents have their particular relationships, and what makes that perspective continue through change.

The explanatory direction is from awareness to manifestation. This does not remove the need for an explanation. Saying that awareness is fundamental leaves open which systems have perspectives, where one subject ends and another begins, and what experience is like. The Shadow Psychophysical Constitution, SPC-2, supplies explicit candidate laws for those questions. Its ambition is to make the commitments inspectable instead of leaving an unspecified bridge between physical organization and experience.

This is Version 2 of the earlier Consciousness Field account. It supersedes that presentation with one current programme: Shadow Theory and Consciousness: Awareness, Perspectival Realization, and the Source-to-Experience Problem, by Jeremy Rodgers, Independent Researcher, published 20 September 2026. Its status is a candidate internal constitutive resolution under declared assumptions. Four distinctions that change the question

Awareness names the proposed knowing aspect of reality. A localized subject is an admitted experiential perspective. A lived scene is what is presented now. A person includes bodily organization, practical commitments, memory and biography. These roles interact, but the theory does not treat them as synonyms.

Scene is deliberately broader than a visual image. Pain, sound, bodily presence or an unfamiliar animal presentation can count as a scene. Neither a narrative self nor the thought “I am experiencing this” is required for all possible experience. A process may shape a scene without appearing in it as a separately noticed object. Memory is different again: a remembered episode is a present representation of a past occurrence, not the occurrence itself.

Consider seeing a red cup. Discriminating its color, reaching for it, describing it and remembering it are different achievements. The cup as experienced depends on sensory processing, current state and learned organization. That does not mean perception creates the external cup. Nor does fluent description alone establish experiential presence. These separations let the account consider infants, animals and artificial systems without making adult human conversation the universal entrance requirement.

Reality, source and readout

The manuscript uses U for reality prior to an operational source/readout distinction. “Prior” concerns explanation, not an earlier moment in cosmic history. U is not supplied as a mathematical state space, a field carrying extra energy, or a person observing the universe. The source-awareness commitment does not assign one universal cosmic scene.

A working source, S, is a description complete enough for a nominated problem. Its readout, T, retains some distinctions and loses others. A temperature reading can be adequate for one question while failing to determine chemical composition. Both descriptions can concern the same physical reality without either determining everything about the other. Likewise, saying that physical and phenomenal descriptions have a common source does not itself derive their relationship.

The mathematical test is target-relative: a readout can determine a target exactly only if source states identified by the readout agree on that target. This provides a disciplined way to ask whether a proposed brain or machine descriptor contains the distinctions an explanation needs. A failed description may need more physical information; it does not automatically reveal an additional force.

The ontological and operational distinctions lead to the source/readout descent theorem.

A vessel must be physically realized

Before assigning experience, the book asks what a physical system can actually do. Its physical chapters examine observer-independent events, material records, retained resources and the causal reuse of information. A recorded outcome must be written, persist under specified conditions and be available to a later process. An ideal symbol on a diagram supplies none of that by itself.

The quantum-measurement chapters present two distinct constitutive completions, each retaining its own assumptions. Their role is to establish actual event histories and records without making a conscious observer trigger the event. SPC-2 does not use awareness to collapse a wavefunction. These constructions are physical antecedents for investigating vessels; they are not a requirement that every qualifying vessel be quantum.

The mathematical chapters then study internal representation, regulation, response and fixed-point constructions. A system can represent a target, sustain a record or settle into a stable organization without those theorems alone proving experience. Their contribution is to describe capacities on which an explicitly stated psychophysical law can act. The worked classical two-bit vessel later shows how the central constitution can be evaluated without importing every physical construction in the book.

The indispensable input: a certified realization

SPC-2 applies to a certified specification called R*. It identifies components and states, actual interaction routes, native timing, physically available operations, internally retained records, boundary conditions, resources and process provenance. It also states a selection doctrine: which physical interfaces, routes and tests define this proposed vessel. Those choices are fixed before seeking a preferred consciousness verdict.

Three roles must be kept separate. Physical data describe what is implemented. Constitutive selection specifies which organization the theory treats as native. Analysis chooses which measurements or approximations a researcher examines. Shortening a plot or inspecting fewer tests changes the researcher's information; it does not change the already specified vessel.

This is more demanding than drawing a recurrent graph around a brain or a machine. An omitted external memory may invalidate the claimed internal dynamics. Separately possible connections may never operate together in one executable schedule. Even a complete transition matrix need not uniquely select its primitive components: the book proves a finite symmetry obstruction. Physical ports, carrier structure or further selection premises may be needed.

Failure to certify a representation is not a verdict that its physical subject matter is unconscious. It identifies an incomplete application of this theorem. A richer carrier, better boundary model or a different mathematical treatment may be necessary.

A0–A3: presence, admission, content and continuation

A0, source awareness, states the ontological commitment. Awareness is the knowing aspect of U, rather than a second independently acting substance. A0 supplies the interpretation; it is not an extra numerical input to the graph calculations.

A1, native recurrent realization, assigns one perspective to each qualifying maximal internal recurrent core. Qualification requires an executable covering return and at least two distinct native predictive classes in the occurrence's actual operating type and resource context. A drawn cycle is insufficient. The nominated physical schedule must execute, and a distinction must return. Overlapping recurrent subassemblies inside one admitted core do not receive additional subjects.

A2, endogenous predictive structuralism, identifies phenomenal relational organization with the core's complete endogenous predictive object. Its actual realized state picks out the current point within that structure. This is a strong constitutive identification, not a theorem deriving feeling from prediction.

A3, nonbranching process continuation, links qualifying occurrences into episodes through physical process provenance. Continuation requires exactly one qualifying successor and predecessor. A genuine split, merger or qualification gap ends predecessor episodes and begins new qualifying successor episodes. Growth, repair and gradual replacement can preserve an episode when the required chain continues.

What “all finite futures” means

A2 asks what distinctions matter to the vessel's own admitted operations and records. Two actual internal states belong to the same predictive class when every admitted finite native test gives the same future transcript law from either state. States that some such test can distinguish remain different. The organization includes operations, outcomes, probabilities, continuing transitions and their labels.

The phrase “all finite futures” characterizes current dispositions. It does not mean the brain explicitly calculates its entire future, that future events act backward, or that an observer's uncertain beliefs become the actual state. An analyst's short forecast can miss a distinction that appears later; the constitutive object retains it. On the certified finite domain, an exact finite calculation decides this all-future equivalence.

One further check matters: agreement about future record probabilities alone does not guarantee a well-defined transition law between actual predictive classes. The publication therefore requires checked predictive-fibre congruence. A2 retains the resulting transition instruments rather than reducing everything to a single integration number.

An external report device is modeled separately. If it preserves the native organization, attaching a different recorder does not change the assigned experience. A device that feeds back, consumes relevant resources or changes the internal grammar can alter the organization, and must be analyzed as such.

A small vessel with a completely visible calculation

The worked example contains two binary registers, A and B. Each updates from the other's previous value with independent noise: A flips the incoming value with probability one tenth, B with probability one quarter. The complete system has four states: 00, 01, 10 and 11. Its native records are the next register values, reused in the following update.

Under the supplied internal-route and resource contract, a two-tick schedule runs from A through B and back to A. Changing A's initial value changes the terminal law by a positive amount. The four first-step transition distributions are different, so there are four native predictive classes. The example satisfies the relevant congruence condition and A1 assigns one perspective within this operational model.

The numbers reveal a useful distinction. Some pairs of states have native predictive contrast four fifths and others one half. A separate external device that copies a present bit can distinguish configurations perfectly. That stronger external interrogation does not redefine the native structure. It is a different physical channel.

A2 assigns the four pointed predictive states a corresponding phenomenal organization; the book does not label them red, pain, joy or human thought. The example demonstrates a determinate finite assignment. It establishes neither that an ordinary register is empirically conscious nor that the current admission law identifies nature's true lower boundary.

Brains, dreams and intervals without a scene

For mature biological vessels, the book proposes an interpretation in terms of coupling between explicit scene-forming organization and implicit generative processing. Sensory interpretation, mnemonic reconstruction and unattended activity can help shape a scene without becoming separately presented contents. There is no second viewer assigned to “the unconscious.”

Dreaming illustrates how an organized scene can continue when external constraint is reduced. A dream can be vivid while poorly matching the surrounding room. Anesthesia raises a different possibility: scene-forming organization may fail while substantial biological activity and person-level continuity persist. Nonresponse, amnesia, disconnected experience and genuine absence of experience must be distinguished.

A genuinely scene-less interval contains no currently instantiated localized experiential subject. It is not someone watching darkness; darkness would itself be a scene. Under A3, a genuine qualification gap ends an episode and renewed qualification begins another, even though the organism and biography continue. Failed recall alone establishes neither absence nor presence of experience.

Candidate cortical correlates concern differentiated effective interaction, not a universal frequency or complexity threshold. This biological interpretation does not add a cortical veto to A1 or silently remove admitted minimal cases. Its adequacy remains an application question.

Different vessels, different possible worlds

SPC-2 requires neither adult language nor autobiographical reflection. Animal applications must begin with the organism's own physically meaningful sensory and action spaces. Matching a human task score does not establish an identical lived world. Differences between an insect, a marine mammal and a human concern organizations and capacities that should be examined, not arranged automatically on one consciousness scale.

The same substrate openness permits artificial consciousness in principle. The relevant object would be an executing physical organization with justified native operations, persistence, boundaries and provenance. A static weight array, a transcript and a running system are different objects. Fluent claims of awareness do not supply an R* certificate, and this edition certifies no current LLM session.

A1 is also deliberately permissive at the small end. A genuinely certified one-bit self-return process with distinguishable native future laws can qualify. The account supplies no hidden intelligence, biological or complexity threshold to exclude it. A rock is not admitted merely because it exists, but “simple” is not a disqualification when the actual conditions hold. Whether this law over-admits is an unresolved empirical and philosophical responsibility.

Animals, minimal systems and artificial implementations each require a concrete realization.

A changing self-model need not mean a new subject

The personal model is consequential: memories, bodily ownership, commitments and a narrative identity guide action. Calling that model constructed does not make the person unreal. Contemplative and altered-state discussions motivate a narrower point: familiar self-identification can change while experience continues.

The nondual interpretation places vessels and their worlds within reality rather than in separate substances. It does not turn distinct localized perspectives into one cosmic observer. First-person reports can suggest distinctions to investigate, but a feeling of unity or revelation does not prove the source-awareness premise, personal survival or access to an exhaustive source.

Identity across time follows A3's process rule. Copying memories into another implementation can preserve useful information without transferring a numerically identical subject. Conversely, memory loss need not end an otherwise continuing qualifying episode. Gradual replacement can preserve continuity through a nonbranching provenance chain even when no original material remains at the end. These conclusions are conditional on a justified physical provenance specification, not on similarity of personal stories.

Self-identification, process provenance and artificial memory handoffs keep these questions separate.

What completion establishes—and what would assess it

The finite completion theorem proves that a certified finite R*, together with A0–A3, determines admission, subject support, episodes, pointed phenomenal structures and grounded reports. It shows that no unnamed manifestation map remains after the declared inputs are fixed. It does not derive those inputs, prove the ontology or validate an actual brain.

Applications face concrete tests. Does the proposed physical model predict records under held-out interventions? Does its decomposition remain defensible across justified changes of resolution? Does one fixed A2 correspondence match independently elicited phenomenal relations? Exact weak internal coupling can sharply change A1's subject count, so uncertainty about boundaries must be reported rather than hidden.

There is also a precise limit: adding the aspect interpretation while holding all physical transition and report laws fixed changes no physical transcript probabilities. Such transcripts alone cannot distinguish the interpretation from an otherwise identical physical account. This conservativity does not erase tests of realizations and mappings; it identifies which claim a test can bear on.

The edition reports no completed neural-data validation or universal consciousness detector. Its contribution is a fully stated candidate constitution and a finite domain on which its consequences can be calculated, challenged and compared.
