The exact projected Einstein equation
Israel junction condition
Let the brane surface stress tensor be Sμν=−λqμν+Tμν,S≡qμνSμν=−4λ+T.(22) The Israel condition [3] for a thin shell in five dimensions is [Kμν]≡Kμν+−Kμν−=−κ52(Sμν−31qμνS),(23) the factor 31 being 1/(D−2) with D=5. Imposing the RS2 Z2 reflection symmetry gives Kμν+=−Kμν−, so [Kμν]=2Kμν evaluated with the outward normal on one side, and hence Kμν=−2κ52[Tμν+31(λ−T)qμν].(24) Indeed, Sμν−31qμνS=Tμν−λqμν−31qμν(T−4λ)=Tμν+31qμν(λ−T), which gives (24) on halving. Traces: K=qμνKμν=−2κ52[T+34(λ−T)]=−2κ52[34λ−31T]=−6κ52(4λ−T).(25)
Thus, under Z2 symmetry, the extrinsic curvature is fixed algebraically by the brane stress tensor. This is precisely why the quadratic correction below descends to brane data while the projected Weyl tensor does not.
Gauss–Codazzi projection
The Gauss equation for the embedding is (4)Rμνρσ=(5)RABCDeAμeBνeCρeDσ+KμρKνσ−KμσKνρ.(26) Decompose the five-dimensional Riemann tensor into Weyl and Ricci parts, (5)RABCD=(5)CABCD+32(gA[C(5)RD]B−gB[C(5)RD]A)−61(5)RgA[CgD]B,(27) and use (5), which gives (5)RAB=32Λ5gAB and (5)R=310Λ5 away from the brane. Define the electric projection of the bulk Weyl tensor, Eμν:=(5)CABCDnAeBμnCeDν,(28) which is symmetric and traceless, qμνEμν=0, by the trace identities of the Weyl tensor and n⋅n=1.
Contracting (26) twice and substituting (27) yields the well-known intermediate identity Gμν=−21Λ5qμν+Qμν(K)−Eμν,(29) where the complete extrinsic-curvature contribution is Qμν(K)=KKμν−KμβKνβ−21qμν(K2−KαβKαβ).(30)
We now insert (24) into (30). Write Kμν=−2κ52(Tμν+αqμν) with α≡31(λ−T), so that K=−2κ52(T+4α). Then KKμνKμβKνβK2=4κ54(T+4α)(Tμν+αqμν),(31)=4κ54(TμβTνβ+2αTμν+α2qμν),(32)=4κ54(T+4α)2,KαβKαβ=4κ54(TαβTαβ+2αT+4α2).(33) Substituting (31)–(33) directly into (30), without yet using the value of α, gives the unsimplified expression Qμν=4κ54[(T+4α)(Tμν+αqμν)−(TμβTνβ+2αTμν+α2qμν)−21qμν((T+4α)2−TαβTαβ−2αT−4α2)].(34) Expanding and collecting on the independent structures Tμν, TμβTνβ, and qμν: Qμν=4κ54[(T+2α)Tμν−TμβTνβ+qμν(21TαβTαβ−21T2−2αT−3α2)].(35) Indeed, the qμν coefficient collects α(T+4α)−α2−21(T2+8αT+16α2−TαβTαβ−2αT−4α2)=21TαβTαβ−21T2−2αT−3α2, while the Tμν coefficient collects (T+4α)−2α=T+2α.
Now restore α=31(λ−T) in (35) and collect by powers of λ. The Tμν coefficient becomes T+32(λ−T)=31T+32λ, contributing 4κ54(31TTμν+32λTμν)=12κ54TTμν+6κ54λTμν. The qμν coefficient becomes 21TαβTαβ−21T2−32(λ−T)T−31(λ−T)2=21TαβTαβ−61T2−31λ2, contributing 8κ54qμνTαβTαβ−24κ54qμνT2−12κ54λ2qμν. Together with the −4κ54TμβTνβ term this is exactly Qμν=−12κ54λ2qμν+6κ54λTμν+κ54Πμν,(36) with Πμν=−41TμβTνβ+121TTμν+81qμνTαβTαβ−241qμνT2.(37) No cross terms are dropped and no λ-dependence is hidden in the purely quadratic part: all λ2 dependence enters through −31λ2 in the qμν coefficient, and all λT dependence through 32λ in the Tμν coefficient.
Substituting (36) into (29) gives the Shiromizu–Maeda–Sasaki equation [2]: Gμν[q]=−Λ4qμν+κ42Tμν+κ54Πμν−Eμν,(38) with Λ4=21(Λ5+61κ54λ2),κ42=8πG4=61κ54λ.(39) Equivalently, writing the equation in the form Gμν+Λ4qμν=κ42Tμν+CμνRS, the RS2 realization of the source-induced metric response is CμνRS=κ54Πμν−Eμν.(40)
Every coefficient in (38)–(40) follows from the action (3), the junction condition (23), and the Gauss identity (26). Dimensions are consistent: [κ54]=L6, [TμνTμν]=L−8, so [κ54Π]=L−2=[Eμν]=[Gμν].
Conservation, Bianchi, and nonclosure
With no exchange of matter energy into the bulk, the Codazzi equation Dμ(Kμν−Kqμν)=(5)RABnAeBν=32Λ5nAeAν=0 combined with (24) gives ∇μTμν=0.(41) Applying the four-dimensional contracted Bianchi identity ∇μGμν=0 to (38) then yields ∇μEμν=κ54∇μΠμν.(42)
This is the exact nonclosure statement in local form. Equation (42) fixes the divergence of Eμν, which is four of its components’ worth of information, but leaves its transverse-traceless content , precisely the free bulk gravitational response , undetermined by brane data. The projected system (38)–(42) is covariantly consistent but is not in general a closed four-dimensional initial-value system. This is the tensorial counterpart of Proposition 3.1: the wave packet of Section 3 supplies two solutions with identical instantaneous brane data and different later Eμν.
