Freedom through recognition is a definite change in the participant’s relation to its constitution. Received capacities can support inquiry, commitments and practical revision without becoming ultimate self-creation. This concluding chapter joins the philosophical dependency structure to the complete-history and physical constructions, keeping their distinct achievements visible.
18 Conclusion: a participant’s changing relation to its constitution
The strongest supported account joins a limit on ultimate independent self-authorship to a positive mechanism of understanding and change. Constitution does not place action outside the person. It locates action in the organization through which the person exists. A complete history can contain development, deliberation, commitments and altered conduct. Its completeness does not make those relations idle or supply a second author acting instead of the participant.
The cumulative negative argument has explicit carrying premises. A full actual occurrence contains its act. This differs from uniqueness across histories with complete earlier data fixed. Relativistic geometry constrains simultaneity and causal order; eternalism requires an ontological bridge. Neither common constitution nor a block representation alone excludes a dependent settler. Forward uniqueness suffices to exclude a different future act under the same complete prior data; inherited well-founded authorization obstructs ultimate self-establishment under its own premises. Evidence from independently identified realization and intervention can support a comparative preference for the realized account. Exclusion of a further irreducible initiating relation still requires token-causal constitution; agreement of intervention laws alone does not establish it.
The source-readout framework explains how local access differs from a complete description without turning every difference into absent agency. In the exact history ensemble, the participant learns its source mechanism while remaining uncertain about a fresh target. Later access permits exact command prediction without perfect knowledge of success. This connects global completeness to local acquisition. It establishes neither objective indeterminism nor an illusion of all temporal experience.
The selected-benefit formula also identifies when diagnostic error is systematically associated with different later tasks. It preserves the stated noisy advantage under the explicit stability condition and correctly predicts failure under the checked context coupling.
The positive account is acquired, selective authority revision. The mechanism, retained account, evaluative criterion, write route and fresh action are separately specified. Understanding earns a role when it supplies evidence relevant to whether a recommendation should govern action. It can warrant retention as well as change. Calibrated practical information, memory, relationships and commitments can continue to guide conduct. The achievement is answerability of authority to its grounds, not unrestricted revision.
The block-compatible literature strengthens that claim. Hoefer contests an unwarranted explanatory privilege of a distant boundary. Brennan correctly requires a positive account beyond symmetric entailment; the realized transaction supplies a limited functional instance without upgrading parameters into ultimate sources. Ismael explains how deciding can constitute a judgment belonging to the organized person while accepting that this is not self-creation all the way down. Thyssen’s hypothetical and actual bundles require different modal interpretations; the compatibility results expose obligations for either selection account.
The new mathematics makes those obligations checkable. Full-slice parameterization does not establish fragmentary determining power. Individually available alternatives need not form a legal joint profile. Infinite successive feasibility requires a further completion argument. An exact disclosed forecast can fail against an installed opposing policy while hidden forecasts and calibrated probability forecasts remain possible. Compatible spacelike operations can preserve the same event records across temporal orderings under explicit support and causal conditions. These are applications of established mathematical ideas, not a purported new general theorem of freedom.
Physical realization remains substantive. The retained circuit is checked through its actual compiled routing with the same single-audit, single-fresh-case scope. Finite strength, transport, ingress, holding, clock resources and implementation error remain explicit. Relativistic placement adds finite-speed and mediator obligations rather than a manufactured hardware certificate. Prepared memories and restricted access explain limited temporal asymmetries in these models; a general explanation of human temporal phenomenology needs further evidence.
The awareness interpretation and A0-A3 constitution remain distinct from these operational results. The unknown Ground is not identified with spacetime or a finite source. A local present is proposed as an organized occurrence involving retention and anticipation, rather than a global slice or external sweep. The complete-occurrence problem remains open at the level of psychophysical adequacy, including the wider nested or overlapping possibilities. Agency contributes organizational evidence but does not select subjects by itself.
Freedom through recognition can therefore name a definite achievement. A participant understands a feature of its activity, examines its claim on conduct, and retains a changed or reaffirmed relation to it while continuing to act. That understanding remains conditioned. Its consequences can nevertheless belong to the person whose organization carries the inquiry. This is meaningful participation without a promise of ultimate self-creation.
