The first finite-length correction

Track the cubic residual along one generator, the width estimate needed to transfer it, and the separate weighted expansion prescription.

6. Follow the residual beyond leading order

Hold the boost and leading temperature ℏκ/(2π)\hbar\kappa/(2\pi) fixed as readouts. Start with densities per unit initial area along a central generator. Write RjR_j and TjT_j for the zeroth and first Taylor coefficients of RkkR_{kk} and TkkT_{kk} in λ\lambda, with data smooth enough for the following remainders. At equilibrium, θ(0)=σ(0)=0\theta(0)=\sigma(0)=0, and Raychaudhuri gives

θ=−R0λ−12R1λ2+O(λ3).\theta=-R_0\lambda-\tfrac12R_1\lambda^2+O(\lambda^3).

The area Jacobian J(λ)=dAλ/dA0J(\lambda)=dA_\lambda/dA_0 has J(0)=1J(0)=1 and J˙=θJ\dot J=\theta J. Integrating gives

d(δA)dA0=R0h22−R1h36+O(h4),d(δQ)dA0=κ(T0h22−T1h33)+O(h4).\frac{d(\delta A)}{dA_0} =\frac{R_0h^2}{2}-\frac{R_1h^3}{6}+O(h^4), \qquad \frac{d(\delta Q)}{dA_0} =\kappa\left(\frac{T_0h^2}{2}-\frac{T_1h^3}{3}\right)+O(h^4).

The heat flux uses J=1+O(λ2)J=1+O(\lambda^2), so its area-factor correction first appears at fourth order. On an Einstein solution, Tj=ℏηRj/(2π)T_j=\hbar\eta R_j/(2\pi) for j=0,1j=0,1. Therefore the leading terms cancel and the cubic terms leave

d(δQ−πTηδA)dA0=−ℏκη12πh3∇kRkk(p)+O(h4).(2)\frac{d(\delta Q-\pi_T\eta\delta A)}{dA_0} =-\frac{\hbar\kappa\eta}{12\pi}h^3\nabla_k R_{kk}(p)+O(h^4).\tag{2}

For a concrete example, take spatially flat FLRW with scale factor a(t)=ta(t)=t, t>0t>0, and an affine radial null generator with kt=1/tk^t=1/t. Then H=1/tH=1/t and Rkk=−2H˙(kt)2=2/t4R_{kk}=-2\dot H(k^t)^2=2/t^4. At t=1t=1, ∇kRkk=−8\nabla_kR_{kk}=-8. The conserved Einstein stress tensor gives a nonzero coefficient in equation (2). Even on shell, cancellation beyond leading order is not automatic.

Transfer to a pencil of finite transverse width

For a smooth centered family the initial expansion contributes O(hℓ2)O(h\ell^2) per unit initial area. Taylor coefficients smooth in transverse coordinates have averages that differ from their central values by O(ℓ2)O(\ell^2), under the same centering and smoothness assumptions. Expand the heat and area expressions in hh before averaging. Centering replaces each coefficient by its central value plus O(ℓ2)O(\ell^2), including the coefficient of hh in the area change. The residual divided by A0A_0 therefore has the central expansion in equation (2) with an additional O(hℓ2)O(h\ell^2) error.

Consequently ℓ=o(h)\ell=o(h) suffices to preserve the cubic coefficient. The leading-order scaling ℓ=O(h)\ell=O(h) can carry an extra cubic term. The quartic remainder is retained if hℓ2=O(h4)h\ell^2=O(h^4) in fixed local units. These statements use the same readout prescription. A relative temperature correction of order hh, or a quadratic correction to the boost on the horizon, can also change the cubic coefficient.

A separate weighted expansion prescription

Define a boost-weighted functional on the pencil HH:

δSw=η∫H(−λ)(−θ˙) dλ dAλ.\delta S_w=\eta\int_{H}(-\lambda)(-\dot\theta)\,d\lambda\,dA_\lambda.

It agrees at leading order with plain area entropy on an equilibrium generator. Substitution of the Raychaudhuri equation gives the exact identity for these prescribed readouts:

δQ−πTδSw=κ∫H(−λ)[Tkk−ℏη2π(Rkk+θ22+σabσab)] dλ dAλ.\delta Q-\pi_T\delta S_w =\kappa\int_{H}(-\lambda) \left[T_{kk}-\frac{\hbar\eta}{2\pi} \left(R_{kk}+\frac{\theta^2}{2}+\sigma_{ab}\sigma^{ab}\right)\right] \,d\lambda\,dA_\lambda.

On shell, the remaining terms are nonpositive in this residual convention. Along the central equilibrium generator the density starts at order h4h^4. With S1=(∇kσ)∣pS_1=(\nabla_k\sigma)|_p in a parallel screen frame, the leading term is

−ℏκη8πh4(R022+S1 abS1ab).-\frac{\hbar\kappa\eta}{8\pi}h^4 \left(\frac{R_0^2}{2}+S_{1\,ab}S_1^{ab}\right).

The quadratic optical terms have the displayed coefficient of λ2\lambda^2 before integration against −λ-\lambda. The area Jacobian is 1+O(λ2)1+O(\lambda^2). This establishes the signed remainder for a weighted expansion functional. A physical entropy interpretation requires additional input, and the identity is separate from entropy-production laws in nonequilibrium generalizations [7].
