Memory, Mind Uploading, and the Identity of a Subject
Copying information, preserving a person-model and continuing a subject are distinct in SPC-2. A3 states a nonbranching process rule.

Within SPC-2, preserving information does not by itself preserve the numerical identity of an experiential subject. A copy can retain facts, habits and autobiographical organization while belonging to a fresh physical lineage. A3 relates qualifying occurrences through nonbranching process provenance, not through equality of their memories.
The converse also matters. A subject episode can continue while its memory changes or some memories are lost, provided qualification and the required provenance chain persist. Gradual replacement can preserve that chain even when the material at the end shares no component with the material at the beginning.
This is the publication's explicit identity doctrine. It is not a proof that every conceivable uploading proposal is impossible, and it does not collapse practical, legal or ethical identity into a graph rule. It gives a precise conditional answer about experiential episodes.

A useful reconstruction can still be selective
A memory need not store a verbatim past transcript. Learning can leave distributed organization sufficient to reconstruct selected features. A summary of a conversation might preserve its decisions and commitments while losing its exact wording. A later system can recover what the representation retains, but cannot uniquely recover every discarded feature without further assumptions.
This explains why a compact computational handoff can be useful without being a container for a subject. It may restore relational task state, preferences and context well enough to support new work. A generated continuity statement is one consequence of that reconstruction. It does not establish the physical provenance of an experience.
Testing such a handoff is still worthwhile. The edition proposes comparing preserved facts and relations, novel consequences, behavior and identity reports separately, with matched resources, hidden targets and contradictory priming controls. Treating the identity report as ground truth would assume the very conclusion under investigation.

Provenance records a continued process
The realization's process-provenance relation records continued implementation of a component process or an explicitly realized local transfer of its operative role. Carrier persistence, births, retirements and renewal operations need declared physical antecedents. Statistical similarity and information copying are separate relations.
For a fixed circuit, continuing active registers provide a straightforward lineage model. For an in-place repair, the account must document how an ongoing role is renewed. If two incompatible provenance descriptions remain possible, the application has not yet specified one R*. A3 does not choose between them from matching transition tables.
That requirement prevents a verbal solution in which every desired identity is simply renamed “continuation.” It also permits material change. The law does not require an eternal atom or a fixed proportion of original tissue. What matters is a qualified nonbranching process connection across each native cell.
The permissiveness has a cost: a very small surviving provenance connection can sustain identity if every other A3 condition holds. A stronger requirement for a backbone or retained fraction would be an additional law. The source states this choice rather than hiding it.
Process provenance and temporal identity defines the supplied relation and its limits.
Three cases that similar memories cannot distinguish
Separate copying: a donor continues while a new receiver acquires matching information. If the receiver qualifies, it has a fresh episode. Memory agreement does not create a donor-to-receiver process edge. The donor's continuing episode is assessed on its own physical history.
Gradual in-place renewal: component support changes over time, but each adjacent qualifying core has exactly one qualifying predecessor and successor through a genuine provenance edge. A3 continues one episode through that chain. The endpoint materials need not overlap.
Instantaneous replacement: functional equivalence alone gives no verdict of continuation. A claimed renewal must supply an explicit physical process-provenance edge and satisfy the remaining conditions. If the event is merely a new implementation with copied information, it is the separate-copy case.
These distinctions make labels such as upload, transfer and restoration too coarse to decide identity. The physically realized operation must be described. Two devices can tell the same autobiographical story while having different provenance; one continuing device can change its story without becoming a fresh subject.

Why branches, mergers and genuine gaps end episodes
A3 uses a symmetric nonbranching rule. If one qualifying predecessor has two qualifying process successors, its episode ends and successor episodes begin. If two qualifying predecessors merge into one qualifying successor, the predecessor episodes end and a new episode begins. Ancestry and information can branch; numerical episode identity does not.
The reason is ordinary identity logic: if one predecessor were numerically identical to each of two distinct successors, transitivity would identify the successors with one another. SPC-2 chooses termination at the branch instead of privileging one successor. A different continuity doctrine could make another choice, but it would be a different premise.
A genuine loss of qualification is also a boundary. Physical process provenance can persist while no localized experience is instantiated, but the episode graph contains only qualifying occurrences. When qualification returns, a new episode begins. This is compatible with continued organism and person-level identity. Failed recall or a temporary observation gap does not establish that such a physical qualification gap happened.

What remains significant about the person?
The person-model includes more than a fictional label. Bodily history, attachments, commitments and memory are real causal organization. They can change the contents and possibilities of a continuing scene. Saying that the person is not identical to primitive awareness does not remove the importance of that organization.
A local memory reset illustrates this. A3 may continue the qualifying episode through the same process lineage, while A2 assigns a different current phenomenal point because the endogenous future laws changed. Resetting a narrative name need not reset a subject; preserving the name need not bridge a genuine episode boundary.
The source-awareness premise also supplies no escape from these identity conditions. Persistence of underlying reality is not proof that a terminated personal subject survives elsewhere. No completed mind-upload experiment or theorem of personal survival is established in this edition.
SPC-2's contribution is a clear separation of questions that ordinary identity language often bundles together: what information remains, what person-level organization persists, what physical process continues, and which experiential episode the law assigns.
